Summary

Rotifers, tiny aquatic invertebrates, consumed Giardia cysts, a waterborne parasite. This ingestion by rotifers may offer a natural method for reducing Giardia contamination in water sources.

Background:

  • Giardia is a waterborne protozoan parasite causing gastrointestinal illness.
  • Contaminated water sources pose a significant public health risk.
  • Natural biological control agents for waterborne pathogens are of interest.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential of rotifers as biological control agents for Giardia cysts.
  • To determine if rotifers can ingest and retain Giardia cysts.

Main Methods:

  • Seven rotifer species were exposed to Giardia cysts from infected calves.
  • Giardia cysts were prestained with a fluorescent antibody for visualization.
  • Ingestion and retention were observed using phase-contrast, DIC, and fluorescence microscopy.

Main Results:

  • Five rotifer species (Epiphanes brachionus, Plationus patulus, Philodina spp. A & B, Platyias quadricornis) ingested Giardia cysts.
  • Ingested cysts were retained within the rotifers' bodies during the observation period.
  • No significant differences in ingestion rates were detailed across the five species.

Conclusions:

  • Rotifers demonstrate a capacity to ingest and retain Giardia cysts.
  • Rotifer ingestion of Giardia cysts may contribute to reducing water contamination.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the efficacy of rotifers in Giardia control.
