Summary

Registered nurse (RN) practice analysis shows minimal differences in job tasks between associate degree (ADN) and baccalaureate degree (BSN) prepared nurses. Both educational pathways result in similar performance of routine and complex nursing activities.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Practice Analysis
  • Healthcare Workforce Studies
  • Educational Outcomes in Nursing

Background:

  • The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) conducts triennial practice analyses to validate the NCLEX-RN examination.
  • These analyses assess current job tasks performed by registered nurses (RNs).
  • Data may reveal practice variations among different nurse demographics, including educational background.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a secondary analysis of the 1999 RN Practice Analysis data.
  • To investigate potential differences in nursing practice based on educational preparation (ADN vs. BSN).

Main Methods:

  • Compared the average frequencies of 189 nursing activities performed by ADN and BSN graduates.
  • Utilized Pearson r correlation to assess the relationship between the performance averages of the two groups.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analyzed differences in activity performance on a 0-5 scale.
  • Main Results:

    • A high Pearson r correlation of 0.98 was found between ADN and BSN groups' average activity performance.
    • Both ADN and BSN prepared nurses performed routine care activities most frequently.
    • Complex or advanced skills, like patient teaching and care management, were performed at similar, lower rates by both groups.
    • Differences in average performance between ADN and BSN graduates were negligible, with 76% of activities showing less than a 0.25 difference.

    Conclusions:

    • Educational preparation (ADN vs. BSN) does not appear to significantly differentiate the practice of registered nurses.
    • Both associate and baccalaureate degree nursing programs prepare graduates to perform a similar range of nursing activities.
    • Findings support the validity of the NCLEX-RN examination across different entry-level educational pathways.
