Dyslipidaemia may be a risk factor for venous thromboembolism and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) may be protective. The current review outlines the cumulative evidence from both the basic and epidemiologic sciences for why this might be so and offers some directions for future research.
