Summary

Bone-anchored auricular prostheses (BAAPs) offer a safe and effective solution for children with microtia. This study shows high success rates and patient satisfaction with BAAP programs.

Background:

  • Bone-anchored auricular prostheses (BAAPs) provide an alternative to traditional reconstructive methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on the establishment and outcomes of a pediatric Bone-anchored Auricular Prostheses (BAAP) program.
  • To evaluate treatment algorithms, protocols, complications, and patient satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • A review of eleven consecutive pediatric patients receiving BAAPs.
  • Assessment of patient selection criteria, osseointegration stability, skin reactions, and satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • 100% osseointegration success rate was achieved.
  • Only one case required surgical site revision.
  • Skin irritation occurred in 39% of patients, and all patients reported satisfaction.

Conclusions:

  • Bone-anchored auricular prostheses (BAAPs) are a safe and effective treatment for pediatric microtia.
  • The BAAP program demonstrated successful outcomes and high patient acceptance.
