Summary

This study collected bone density data after total hip arthroplasty (THA) to validate computer models. Bone density decreased significantly in the first year, especially below the lesser trochanter.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Computer models simulate periprosthetic bone remodeling after total hip arthroplasty (THA).
  • Clinical data is lacking for validating these simulation results.
  • Prospective volumetric bone density data is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To collect prospective volumetric bone density data in patients after THA.
  • To validate computer models of adaptive bone remodeling.
  • To provide patient-specific 3D finite element meshing data.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective computerized tomography (CT) study in 7 THA patients.
  • Retrospective study of 11 patients 12 years post-THA.
  • Collected ~100,000 bone voxels per femur for density analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Predominant bone density change occurred within the first year post-THA.
  • Average density reduction of 10% (50-150 HU) after 2 years.
  • Significant density loss observed distal to the lesser trochanter.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first prospective 3D in vivo validation data for periprosthetic bone remodeling theories.
  • Collected data supports patient-specific finite element analysis.
  • Findings provide crucial clinical data for refining THA simulation models.
