Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignancy originating from sebaceous gland epithelium.
  • It most frequently affects the periorbital region but can arise elsewhere.
  • Muir-Torre syndrome is an associated condition characterized by sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies.

Observation:

  • A 14-year-old female presented with a year-long history of an asymptomatic, firm, multilobulated cutaneous nodule on her anterior thorax.
  • The lesion measured 2.5 x 2.3 cm.
  • No family history was available due to adoption.

Findings:

  • Skin biopsy revealed a poorly differentiated infiltrative carcinoma involving the dermis, subcutaneous fat, and focally the epidermis.
  • Tumor cells exhibited both sebaceous and squamous differentiation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological diagnosis confirmed sebaceous carcinoma. Genetic work-up excluded Muir-Torre syndrome.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the occurrence of sebaceous carcinoma in an adolescent patient outside the typical periorbital location.
    • It underscores the importance of thorough histopathological examination for accurate diagnosis.
    • Surgical excision with adequate margins is the primary treatment modality for localized sebaceous carcinoma.
