High-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) testing in ASCUS patients with no prior abnormal Pap results revealed significant cervical lesions. This includes squamous cell carcinoma and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, suggesting a need for proactive management.

Background:

  • The clinical significance of high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) detection in atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) cytology, particularly in patients without prior abnormal Pap smears, requires further investigation.
  • Limited data exists on the histologic outcomes for this specific patient group.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the histologic follow-up of patients with ASCUS cytology positive for high-risk HPV who have no previous abnormal Pap results.
  • To determine the prevalence of significant cervical lesions in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 50 patients with high-risk HPV-positive ASCUS and no prior abnormal Pap results was conducted.
  • Cytologic-histologic correlation was performed over an 11-month period.
