Summary

Accidental overextension of calcium hydroxide into periapical lesions did not impede healing in eleven cases. Despite concerns, endodontic treatment success was observed without surgical intervention, challenging previous assumptions.

Background:

  • Calcium hydroxide is a common intracanal medicament used in endodontic therapy.
  • Periradicular lesions are pathological cavities that form around the apex of a tooth.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated eleven cases with periapical lesions and significant calcium hydroxide overextension.
  • The overextended material extended into the periapical tissues and lesions.

Findings:

  • None of the endodontic treatments failed despite the voluminous calcium hydroxide overextension.
  • Periapical healing occurred in all cases, and surgical intervention was not required.

Implications:

  • Extensive periapical extrusion of calcium hydroxide does not necessarily compromise healing outcomes.
