Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and other symptoms.
  • The potential influence of lifestyle factors, such as smoking, on FMS features requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between smoking habits and various clinical and psychological features of fibromyalgia.
  • To determine if smoking status correlates with symptom severity and functional impairment in female FMS patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 233 female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome was analyzed.
  • Smoking status was assessed based on daily cigarette consumption.
  • Statistical analyses, including Mann Whitney U test and partial correlation, were employed to compare smokers and non-smokers, adjusting for age and education.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 21.9% of patients were identified as smokers.
  • Smoking was significantly associated with increased reports of pain, patient global severity, functional disability, and numbness, even after adjusting for covariates.
  • No significant differences were observed between smokers and non-smokers regarding fatigue, morning fatigue, sleep difficulties, tender points, depression, anxiety, or stress.

Conclusions:

  • Smoking is correlated with heightened pain, numbness, and functional limitations in women with fibromyalgia.
  • Smoking status does not appear to influence fatigue levels or the number of tender points in this population.
