Mitral valve surgery can improve heart function and reduce heart failure in patients with cardiomyopathy. This high-risk surgery offers a viable alternative to heart transplantation for select individuals.

- 1-, 2-, and 5-year survival rates were 91%, 84%, and 77%, respectively.
- Ejection fraction improved significantly (23.1% to 36%; p < 0.02), and NYHA class improved (3.3 to 2.1; p < 0.01).
- Freedom from heart failure readmission was 85%, 79%, and 68% at 1, 2, and 5 years.

- Mitral valve surgery enhances left ventricular function and alleviates heart failure in MR patients with cardiomyopathy.
- High-risk mitral valve surgery can be a suitable alternative to heart transplantation in carefully selected patients.
