Background:

Emergency contraception (EC) is a critical component of reproductive healthcare.
Understanding the characteristics of EC users is essential for service improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the demographic and behavioral characteristics of women seeking emergency contraception.
To identify factors influencing the timing and utilization of EC services.

Main Methods:

A descriptive survey design was employed.
Data were collected via questionnaires from 171 women aged 14-44 at community family planning services.
Analysis was conducted using SPSS.

The mean age of users was 20.2 years; a majority were smokers.

Most users (97.7%) attended within 72 hours, but only 4% within 12 hours of intercourse.

Common reasons for needing EC included condom breakage and inconsistent contraceptive use, often associated with alcohol consumption.

Conclusions:

A significant proportion of EC users engage in sexual risk-taking behaviors.
There is a need to promote timely EC use and improve access within the crucial 12-hour window.
Enhanced information and accessible, user-friendly provision of EC and regular contraceptive methods are vital.
