Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) did not alter substrate utilization during exercise in postmenopausal women. However, exercise itself increased fat utilization over time, regardless of HRT use.

  • Eight HRT users and nine NHRT postmenopausal women performed 30 minutes of treadmill exercise at 80% maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)).

    • Exercise itself promotes increased reliance on fat oxidation over time in postmenopausal women.
    • Findings suggest that exercise intensity and duration are key factors in substrate utilization during physical activity in this population.
