Background:

  • The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has been a significant focus of nursing research.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the existing nursing research landscape is crucial for identifying gaps and directing future studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an updated review of the nursing research literature concerning HIV infection.
  • To develop a dedicated database of HIV/AIDS nursing research using ARCS computer software.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of nursing research literature on HIV/AIDS published between 1986 and 1997 was conducted.
  • 246 client-focused studies were selected and entered into the ARCS HIV/AIDS database for further analysis.

  • Analysis of over 1,000 citations revealed that 22% of nursing studies were client-focused, 29% risk-group focused, and 49% provider-focused.
  • Within the ARCS database, studies were categorized across domains: 35.7% psychologic, 26.4% physiologic, 10% social, and 9.7% behavioral.
  • The majority of studies (53%) employed correlational designs, followed by descriptive (35%) and experimental/quasi-experimental (12%) designs.

Conclusions:

  • While nursing research has addressed various challenges faced by individuals with HIV, there remains a significant need for further investigation.
  • Future research should prioritize the development and evaluation of clinical interventions to improve care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
