Integrated Perspectives on Clinical Decision Support: A Comparative Analysis of Knowledge Management Approaches.

Studies in health technology and informatics·2024

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Clinical Decision Support

Background:

  • Translating research findings into clinical practice is a significant challenge.
  • Arden Syntax offers a standard for encoding evidence in clinical decision support systems (CDSS).
  • Lack of standard linkages to clinical databases hinders knowledge dissemination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a knowledge editor for seamless transfer of medical literature to clinical practice.
  • To facilitate the integration of research findings into CDSS.

Main Methods:

  • A web browser-based application was developed.
  • Implemented MEDLINE linkages for on-demand and periodic queries.
  • Utilized emerging HL7 standards, including a virtual medical record data model, for MLM standardization.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The application successfully linked MEDLINE queries to Arden Medical Logic Modules (MLMs).
  • Standardized knowledge representation was achieved using HL7 standards.

Conclusions:

  • A web-based application can effectively transfer knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Periodic queries and standardized knowledge representation enhance knowledge base maintenance.
