Summary

Afro-Caribbeans show higher rates of peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and diabetes mellitus compared to Caucasians and Indo-Asians. This study highlights ethnic disparities in PVD prevalence and risk factors.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Ethnic variations in cardiovascular diseases like coronary artery and carotid disease are known.
  • Limited data exists on ethnic differences in peripheral vascular disease (PVD) prevalence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate ethnic differences in the prevalence and risk factors of peripheral vascular disease (PVD).

Main Methods:

  • Surveyed 200 consecutive patients with proven PVD (ankle brachial pressure index < 0.8) from a multiethnic urban hospital.
  • Compared PVD prevalence and risk factors across Caucasian, Afro-Caribbean, and Indo-Asian ethnic groups.

Main Results:

  • Afro-Caribbeans presented with PVD more frequently than expected based on population proportion (p=0.013).
  • Afro-Caribbeans had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus compared to other ethnic groups.
  • No significant ethnic differences were found in other PVD risk factors like hypertension, smoking, or prior cardiovascular events.

Conclusions:

  • Ethnic differences in PVD prevalence and underlying risk factors exist among Caucasians, Afro-Caribbeans, and Indo-Asians.
  • Afro-Caribbean individuals are more likely to present with symptomatic PVD compared to Caucasians and Indo-Asians.
