Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases

Background:

  • Epiretinal membranes (ERMs) are prevalent in individuals over 50.
  • While often causing minor visual distortion, ERMs can lead to significant vision loss and metamorphopsia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the classification and terminology of epiretinal membranes.
  • To discuss the etiology, prevalence, symptoms, differential diagnosis, treatment, and complications of ERMs.
  • To present a case of epiretinal membrane with macular pucker.

Main Methods:

  • Posterior vitrectomy and membrane peeling surgery were performed.
  • A review of existing literature on epiretinal membranes was conducted.

Main Results:

  • The case highlights a successful surgical outcome for epiretinal membrane with macular pucker.
  • The discussion covers key aspects of ERM management.

Conclusions:

  • Epiretinal membranes require careful diagnosis and management.
  • Surgical intervention is effective for severe cases impacting vision.
