Summary

Chondroblastoma, a rare bone tumor, can recur. Aggressive curettage with adjuvant therapy is effective for recurrent or aggressive chondroblastoma cases, unlike simple curettage.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Skeletal Tumors
  • Bone Neoplasms

Background:

  • Chondroblastoma is a rare bone neoplasm with characteristic histological features.
  • While generally benign, chondroblastoma can exhibit local recurrence and rare pulmonary metastasis.
  • Optimal surgical management and prognostic factors for chondroblastoma remain subjects of debate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate clinicopathological features of chondroblastoma.
  • To identify predictors of tumor behavior and recurrence.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of different surgical treatments for chondroblastoma.

Main Methods:

  • Clinicopathological review of eleven chondroblastoma cases.
  • Radiographic classification using Enneking's grading system (Stages I, II, III).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of surgical treatments including simple curettage, aggressive curettage, and amputation.
  • Main Results:

    • Seven cases were Stage I, three Stage II, and one Stage III.
    • Nine cases initially treated with simple curettage, one with aggressive curettage, and one with amputation.
    • One case recurred after simple curettage and was reoperated with aggressive curettage and adjuvant treatment; no further recurrence was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Recurrent chondroblastoma cases may exhibit high proliferative activity.
    • Simple curettage is often effective for initial local control.
    • Aggressive curettage combined with adjuvant therapy (alcohol/cement) improves local control for recurrent or aggressive chondroblastomas.
