Background:

  • Infectious endophthalmitis is a severe complication following cataract surgery.
  • It frequently leads to significant vision loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze clinical data of patients with post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis.
  • To evaluate treatment strategies and visual outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of 53 patients treated between 1995 and 2001.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation, causative organisms, treatment, and follow-up (2 weeks to 42 months).

Main Results:

  • Coagulase-negative Staphylococci were the most common pathogens (50%).
  • Bacteria were sensitive to vancomycin combined with amikacin or ceftazidime.
  • Aggressive initial treatment (intraocular antibiotics with IOL removal/vitrectomy) reduced recurrent infections compared to other methods.
  • Median visual acuity improved from hand movements to 0.2.

Conclusions:

  • Vancomycin combined with amikacin or ceftazidime is effective against tested bacteria.
  • Early, aggressive intervention, including IOL removal, is associated with better outcomes and fewer recurrences.
