Oxygenated fluorochemical nutrient emulsion (OFNE) perfusion reduced brain infarct volume in cats with middle cerebral artery occlusion. This novel treatment also helped control intracranial pressure, offering a potential new therapy for ischemic stroke.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of ventriculosubarachnoid perfusion with an oxygen-carrying nutrient emulsion in reducing infarct volume.
  • To assess the impact of this perfusion on intracranial pressure following cerebral ischemia.

  • A prospective, randomized, controlled animal study was conducted.
  • 28 cats underwent permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion.
  • Animals were perfused with either artificial cerebrospinal fluid or an oxygenated fluorochemical nutrient emulsion (OFNE) for 18 hours.
