Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Head and Neck Cancer Research

Context:

  • Recurrence in pathologically negative neck (pN0) status is a significant clinical challenge in head and neck tumors.
  • This phenomenon is often overlooked in neck dissection studies.
  • The explanation for pN0 recurrence is not well-established.

Purpose:

  • To address the controversial issue of recurrence in pathologically negative neck (pN0) head and neck tumors.
  • To highlight the potential role of micrometastases in pN0 recurrence.
  • To stimulate further research into the causes of pN0 recurrence.

Summary:

  • Recurrence in pathologically negative neck (pN0) head and neck tumors is a striking and understudied event.
  • Micrometastases are a proposed explanation for this recurrence.
