Summary

This study found a frequent association between myositis and scleritis. While myositis did not worsen visual prognosis, ocular complications were more common in patients with both conditions.

Background:

  • Scleritis and myositis are inflammatory conditions that can affect ocular and muscular tissues.
  • Understanding the association between these conditions is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between scleritis and myositis.
  • To assess the impact of coexisting myositis on visual prognosis and ocular complications in patients with scleritis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 103 patients diagnosed with episcleritis or scleritis.
  • Evaluation of medical records and ultrasonograms.
  • Assessment of clinical features, systemic associations, ocular complications, treatment, and outcomes.

  • Myositis was present in 11 patients (10.7% of the total cohort).
  • Myositis was found in 14.5% of all scleritis patients and 30.5% of those with posterior scleritis.

  • Visual prognosis was not adversely affected by the presence of myositis.

Conclusions:

  • A frequent association exists between myositis and scleritis.
  • Coexisting myositis in scleritis patients does not negatively impact visual prognosis.
  • The presence of myositis may indicate a more diffuse inflammatory process, leading to increased ocular complications.
