Summary

Xenon plasma arc lights significantly reduce orthodontic bracket curing time. However, a 2-second interval may compromise bond strength in premolars, suggesting 6 seconds is optimal for reliable bonding.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Orthodontic Technology
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Xenon plasma arc lights offer faster curing for light-cured orthodontic bonding.
  • Conventional tungsten-quartz-halogen lights require longer exposure times.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the bond strength of orthodontic brackets using plasma arc lights with reduced curing intervals.
  • To compare plasma arc light curing with conventional halogen light curing.

Main Methods:

  • Bond strength testing of 150 extracted human teeth (premolars and incisors) bonded with composite adhesive.
  • Curing with two commercial plasma arc lights at 2- and 6-second intervals.
  • Control group cured with a halogen light for 20 seconds per bracket.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Plasma arc lights substantially reduced curing time.
  • Significantly lower bond strength was observed for premolar brackets cured with plasma arc lights at 2 seconds compared to 6 seconds or halogen light.
  • Weibull analysis indicated a higher failure probability for premolar brackets with 2-second curing.

Conclusions:

  • A 6-second curing interval is recommended for bonding stainless steel brackets with xenon plasma arc lights.
  • While 2-second curing may suffice for incisors, it poses a risk for premolars.
  • Optimizing curing time is crucial for ensuring reliable orthodontic bracket adhesion.
