Quadricuspid aortic valves (QAV) are rare but can cause significant aortic regurgitation. Early diagnosis is crucial due to potential coronary ostium abnormalities.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Diagnostics

Background:

  • Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • Historically diagnosed intraoperatively or postmortem, QAV is increasingly detected preoperatively.

Observation:

  • This study reports 4 new cases of QAV, increasing the total reported cases to 114.
  • Advances in echocardiography have improved preoperative diagnosis rates.

Findings:

  • Of 114 QAV cases, 46 underwent aortic valve replacement, predominantly in the 5th and 6th decades.
  • Contrary to prior belief, quadricuspid valves with equal leaflets are not less prone to significant aortic regurgitation.
  • QAV is associated with abnormally placed coronary ostia in 10 of 114 cases.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Preoperative diagnosis of QAV is vital for surgical planning.
  • Abnormally placed coronary ostia in QAV patients pose risks, including potential obstruction by prosthetic valves.
