Summary

Most children with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) show abnormal urodynamic findings, often indicating bladder dysfunction. Treatment correlating with urodynamic improvements suggests this dysfunction is a key factor.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Urology
  • Pediatrics

Context:

  • Nocturnal enuresis affects a significant number of children.
  • Understanding the underlying causes of enuresis is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the correlation between urodynamic findings and symptoms in children with nocturnal enuresis.
  • To determine the prevalence of urodynamic abnormalities in enuretic children.

Summary:

  • A urodynamic study was conducted on 175 children (ages 5-12) with nocturnal enuresis.
  • Abnormal urodynamic findings, primarily bladder instability, were identified in 86% of patients.
  • Mild abnormalities were noted in monosymptomatic cases, while treated patients showed correlation between urodynamic results and clinical improvement.

Impact:

  • This study highlights bladder dysfunction as a common underlying cause of nocturnal enuresis.
  • Findings support the use of urodynamic evaluation in diagnosing and managing enuretic children.
  • Results suggest a link between urodynamic parameters and treatment outcomes in pediatric enuresis.
