Current problems in diagnostic radiology·2015

Area of Science:

  • Developmental biology
  • Medical imaging
  • Surgical pathology

Background:

  • Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare congenital anomaly.
  • It arises from abnormal embryogenesis in monochorionic, diamniotic pregnancies.
  • This condition involves one twin enclosed within the body of its sibling.

Observation:

  • Prospective diagnosis was achieved through plain radiography and computed tomography (CT) scans.
  • Imaging revealed characteristic findings suggestive of the anomaly.
  • Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of the parasitic twin.

Findings:

  • The study successfully identified fetus in fetu preoperatively.
  • Radiographic and CT findings were crucial for diagnosis.
  • Two instances of fetus in fetu were confirmed during surgery.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early and accurate diagnosis of fetus in fetu is possible with advanced imaging.
  • This facilitates timely surgical intervention.
  • Understanding the embryological basis aids in managing such rare conditions.
