    Background:

    • Previous models of soleus muscle activity during falls, such as Melvill Jones & Watt (1971b), may not fully capture the complexity of responses.
    • Understanding muscle activation patterns during unexpected falls is crucial for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the detailed electromyographic (EMG) activity of the soleus muscle during unexpected falls.
    • To differentiate between reflexive and voluntary components of muscle activity during falls.
    • To explore the role of the vestibular system in fall-induced muscle responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Electromyography (EMG) was used to record soleus muscle activity in subjects experiencing unexpected falls.
    • Falls were initiated from varying heights to observe responses.
    • Comparison was made between unexpected falls and self-initiated falls.
    • EMG activity was also assessed in patients with absent labyrinthine function.

    Main Results:

    • Soleus muscle activity during unexpected falls exhibited a more complex pattern than previously described.

    • The initial muscle activity appears to be a startle response to the release, with landing deceleration being partly coincidental.
    • The second peak of activity is crucial for voluntary control during the landing phase.
    • Labyrinthine function plays a role in the initial startle response during falls.
