Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Clinical Pharmacology

Background:

  • Stroke is a primary cause of adult-onset epileptic seizures (ES).
  • Late poststroke seizures require effective long-term management strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the long-term efficacy and tolerability of gabapentin in patients with first late poststroke epileptic seizures.
  • To evaluate gabapentin monotherapy for managing late poststroke ES.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 71 patients with first late poststroke ES were treated with gabapentin (900-1,800 mg/day).
  • The study involved a mean follow-up period of 30 months.

Main Results:

  • Epileptic seizure recurrence was observed in 18.3% of patients.
  • Adverse side effects were reported in 38% of cases, with only 2.8% requiring treatment discontinuation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Gabapentin demonstrated a favorable safety profile with minimal treatment withdrawals.
  • Conclusions:

    • Gabapentin monotherapy is a useful and safe treatment for late poststroke epileptic seizures.
    • The drug offers a good balance between efficacy and tolerability for this patient population.
