Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) offers diagnostic and therapeutic benefits for suspected appendicitis compared to open appendectomy (OA). While LA reduces wound infections and speeds recovery, it may increase intra-abdominal abscesses.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Evidence-Based Medicine

Background:

  • Laparoscopic surgery is increasingly recognized for potential diagnostic and therapeutic benefits over conventional surgical approaches.
  • This review examines the latest Cochrane findings on laparoscopic surgery for suspected appendicitis within contemporary surgical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a Cochrane review on laparoscopic surgery for suspected appendicitis.
  • To evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic advantages compared to conventional surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from multiple databases until October 2001.
  • Included studies compared laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) versus open appendectomy (OA) for therapeutic and diagnostic effects.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) was associated with half the rate of wound infections but three times the rate of intra-abdominal abscesses compared to open appendectomy (OA).
  • Patients undergoing LA experienced reduced pain and a faster return to normal activities.
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy significantly reduced negative appendectomy rates and undiagnosed cases.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic surgery for suspected appendicitis demonstrates clear diagnostic and therapeutic advantages over conventional open surgery.
  • These findings align with the growing adoption of endoscopic surgical techniques in clinical practice.
