Summary

Anencephaly, a severe neural tube defect, involves the absence of major skull portions and is incompatible with life. A unique case presented abnormal placental attachment to the cranial defect site.

Background:

Anencephaly is a critical congenital anomaly characterized by the absence of a significant portion of the brain, scalp, and skull.
It is a type of neural tube defect (NTD) that is invariably fatal, typically resulting in stillbirth or demise shortly after birth.

Observation:

This case report details a neonate diagnosed with anencephaly.
A distinctive observation in this infant was the anomalous insertion of the placenta directly onto the exposed cranial defect.

Findings:

The primary finding is the coexistence of anencephaly with abnormal placental attachment to the skull defect.
This presentation highlights a rare anatomical variation in a severe congenital malformation.

Implications:

Understanding such rare placental attachments can offer insights into fetal development and placental biology in the context of severe congenital anomalies.
This case may contribute to the limited literature on placental anomalies associated with neural tube defects.
Further research could explore the potential mechanisms leading to this specific placental malposition.
