A rare case of ectopic cervical thymus in a 3-month-old girl was diagnosed. Complete surgical excision was recommended due to potential complications and malignant transformation risks.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Ectopic thymus, thymic tissue found outside the normal thoracic location, is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • Cervical ectopic thymus can be asymptomatic or present with various symptoms, posing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 3-month-old infant presented with an asymptomatic soft tissue mass in the right neck.
  • Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) revealed a 3-cm solid neck mass with homogeneous enhancement.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated signal intensity identical to mediastinal thymic tissue.

Findings:

  • Surgical microscopic examination confirmed the presence of normal thymic tissue within the cervical mass.
  • Preoperative diagnostic uncertainty was noted due to the unusual location and presentation.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Complete excision of cervical ectopic thymus is advised due to potential life-threatening complications and documented malignant transformations.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering ectopic thymus in the differential diagnosis of pediatric neck masses.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for preventing adverse outcomes associated with ectopic thymus.
