Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Sextant ultrasound-guided biopsy is the standard for prostate cancer diagnosis.
  • Modifications to this technique are continuously explored to improve accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the experience of using a 7.5 MHz endovaginal "end-fire" probe for prostate biopsies.
  • To evaluate its efficacy in diagnosing prostate cancer in patients with suspicious clinical findings.

Main Methods:

  • 262 ultrasound-guided transrectal 18G core biopsies were performed using the endovaginal probe.
  • Biopsy schemes were adapted based on ultrasound findings, including modified sextant biopsies and targeted cores from suspicious areas.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A prostate cancer detection rate of approximately 44% was achieved.
  • Complications were mild, with 1.9% urosepsis and 1.5% urinary retention. Hematuria and rectal bleeding were not significant.
  • Conclusions:

    • The endovaginal "end-fire" probe enables longitudinal and transverse core biopsies for optimal prostate sampling.
    • It facilitates safer transitional zone sampling, avoids the prostatic urethra, and improves peripheral zone access.
    • This technique allows accurate staging of prostate cancer prior to surgery.
