Background:

  • Refractive errors, such as myopia and hyperopia, are common visual conditions.
  • Glaucoma and ocular hypertension are leading causes of vision loss, often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between refractive errors (myopia, emmetropia, hyperopia) and the prevalence of glaucoma and incidence of ocular hypertension.
  • To analyze these associations within a defined white population in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based, cross-sectional and follow-up study involving 4926 participants aged 43-86 years.
  • Standardized assessments of refraction, IOP, and glaucoma were conducted at baseline (1988-1990) and IOP was remeasured 5 years later.

    • Hyperopia was associated with a 40% increased likelihood of incident ocular hypertension over 5 years, compared to emmetropia, after controlling for age, gender, and baseline IOP.

    Conclusions:

    • A cross-sectional association exists between myopia, elevated IOP, and prevalent glaucoma in this population.
    • Hyperopia may be a risk factor for developing ocular hypertension within a 5-year period.
    • Further research is needed to confirm the association between hyperopia and incident ocular hypertension.
