    Summary

Dialyzed transfer factor treatment improved immune responses in patients, including one with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Transfer factor may enhance lymphocyte function maturation, suggesting a potential therapeutic mechanism.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Cellular Biology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is an immunodeficiency characterized by abnormal IgG monocyte receptors.
    • Transfer factor is a dialyzable extract of leukocytes with potential immunomodulatory properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of multiple doses of dialyzed transfer factor in patients with immune deficiencies.
    • To investigate the impact of transfer factor on in vitro and in vivo lymphocyte functions.

    Main Methods:

    • Four patients received multiple doses of dialyzed transfer factor.
    • Immune responses were assessed through skin reactivity tests, in vitro lymphocyte proliferation assays, and mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) reactivity.
    • Contact hypersensitivity to 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) was also evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • One Wiskott-Aldrich patient with abnormal IgG monocyte receptors showed clinical benefit.
    • All patients demonstrated converted skin reactivity and improved in vitro lymphocyte responses.
    • Three patients developed positive reactivity in MLC, and one patient developed DNCB reactivity.

    Conclusions:

    • Dialyzed transfer factor can improve lymphocyte function and reactivity in certain patients.
    • The induction of nonspecific lymphocyte function maturation is a potential mechanism of transfer factor action.
    • Further research into transfer factor's therapeutic potential and mechanisms is warranted.
