    Summary

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is less common in Black individuals compared to White individuals, despite similar rates of deep vein thrombosis. This trend is observed in both general and postoperative cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical research
    • Epidemiology
    • Cardiovascular science

    Background:

    • Pulmonary embolism (PE) incidence varies across racial demographics.
    • Understanding racial disparities in PE is crucial for public health.
    • Previous studies suggest lower PE rates in Black populations compared to White populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the frequency of pulmonary embolism in Black versus White populations.
    • To compare the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism across racial groups.
    • To analyze postoperative pulmonary embolism rates in Black individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of patient data.
    • Comparison of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis incidence.
    • Stratification by race and postoperative status.

    Main Results:

    • Pulmonary embolism is less frequent in Black individuals than in White individuals.
    • Deep vein thrombosis may not be uncommon in Black individuals, but PE development is less frequent.
    • Postoperative pulmonary embolism is likely less common in Black individuals than in White individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Racial disparities in pulmonary embolism incidence persist.
    • The lower observed rates of PE in Black individuals warrant further investigation into underlying factors.
    • Anticipated increase in life expectancy for the Black population may lead to a rise in PE cases in the future.
