Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Electrophysiology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a leading therapy for symptomatic, drug-refractory arrhythmias caused by accessory pathways (APs).
  • A significant data gap exists regarding RFA outcomes for APs specifically within the Indian population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of RFA for accessory pathway-mediated tachycardia.
  • To establish a large Indian database for RFA in accessory pathway ablation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 434 patients (69% male) who underwent RFA for APs between January 1998 and May 2001.
  • Data collection included patient demographics, arrhythmia type, procedural success rates, and complications.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The procedure was successful in 97% of 425 attempted cases.
  • Common findings included Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome (73%) and concealed APs (27%).
  • Complications were rare, with three cases of pericardial tamponade successfully managed; no deaths occurred.

Conclusions:

  • Radiofrequency ablation is a highly effective and safe treatment for accessory pathway-mediated tachycardia.
  • RFA is particularly beneficial for pediatric and young adult patients, offering an alternative to long-term medication.
  • This study contributes valuable data on RFA outcomes in India.
