Summary

Gallbladder ejection fraction testing does not predict gallbladder inflammation in patients undergoing surgery for gallstones. This nuclear medicine test is unlikely to identify patients who will achieve symptom relief after cholecystectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF) measured by nuclear medicine cholescintigraphy correlates with gallbladder inflammation.
  • To determine if GBEF can predict symptomatic relief after cholecystectomy for gallstones.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five outpatients with gallstones and episodic abdominal pain underwent GBEF measurement via cholescintigraphy before laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Pathologic gallbladder specimens were reviewed by a pathologist blinded to GBEF results and scored for inflammation (0-3).
