Summary

Plasma adiponectin (ApN) levels are significantly higher in women with anorexia nervosa (AN) compared to healthy controls. This increase in ApN may be linked to reduced body fat and improved insulin sensitivity in AN patients.

Background:

  • Adiponectin (ApN) is an adipokine that enhances insulin sensitivity and has anti-atherogenic properties.
  • Circulating ApN levels typically decrease in obesity and insulin resistance.
  • The effect of severe fat depletion on ApN levels was previously unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma ApN concentrations in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN).
  • To explore the relationship between ApN levels and anthropometric/metabolic parameters in AN.
  • To understand the influence of starvation-induced fat depletion on ApN.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma ApN was measured in 26 female AN patients and 24 age-matched healthy female controls.
  • Relationships between ApN, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and insulin sensitivity were examined.

    • Plasma ApN levels were 30% higher in AN patients compared to controls (P < 0.01).
    • ApN levels were negatively correlated with BMI and fat mass.

    Conclusions:

    • Plasma ApN levels are elevated in anorexia nervosa.
    • Increased ApN may result from reduced negative feedback from fat mass and/or enhanced insulin sensitivity.
    • Hyperadiponectinemia in AN might contribute to sustained insulin sensitivity and potentially worsen complications.
