Area of Science:

  • Coordination Chemistry
  • Supramolecular Chemistry
  • Crystal Engineering

Background:

  • Alkali metal ions, particularly cesium, often exhibit high coordination numbers.
  • Crown ethers are known for their ability to complex metal ions.
  • Unusual coordination modes can arise from specific steric and electronic interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the coordination behavior of cesium ions with tetrabenzo-24-crown-8.
  • To characterize the crystal structures of novel cesium complexes.
  • To explore unprecedented ligation modes, including linear eta 2-acetonitrile and eta 2-dichloromethane coordination.

Main Methods:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
  • Synthesis of cesium complexes with tetrabenzo-24-crown-8.
  • Crystallographic structure determination and refinement.

Main Results:

  • The crystal structures of two cesium complexes, [Cs(tetrabenzo-24-crown-8)(eta 1-NCMe)2(eta 2-NCMe)][NO3] and [Cs(tetrabenzo-24-crown-8)(eta 1-NCMe)2(eta 2-CH2Cl2)][NO3], were determined.
  • These represent the first reported examples of linear eta 2-acetonitrile coordination to any metal ion.
  • These are also the first structures showing eta 2-acetonitrile and dichloromethane ligation to an alkali metal ion.

Conclusions:

  • Cesium ions, when complexed with tetrabenzo-24-crown-8, can achieve unprecedented coordination geometries.
  • The observed eta 2-coordination of acetonitrile and dichloromethane highlights unusual metal-ligand interactions.
  • Steric and electronic factors likely contribute to these unique bonding arrangements.
