Background:

The Melbourne Vascular Surgical Association initiated a vascular surgical audit program in January 1999.
This program established a benchmark for quality assurance in Australian vascular surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the feasibility and viability of a statewide vascular surgical audit program.
To establish a benchmark for quality assurance in vascular surgery across Victoria.

Main Methods:

A consultative approach ensured widespread adoption across public hospital vascular units in Melbourne and Victoria.
Data collected at admission, operation, and discharge.
Risk stratification using logistic regression and risk-adjusted ratios for adverse events compared outcomes between units.

Main Results:

Consistent standards of vascular surgery were observed across Victoria.
Excellent compliance was noted from academic vascular units.
Private practice data collection was less complete, with only 50% participation from vascular surgeons.

Conclusions:

A statewide audit process for vascular surgery is feasible and viable.
Coordination by the Melbourne Vascular Surgical Association is essential for the program's ongoing success.
