    Background:

    • Liver disease, including viral hepatitis, is often associated with anorexia.
    • The underlying mechanisms for appetite disturbances in liver disease are not fully understood.
    • Gustatory (taste) function may be affected by hepatic dysfunction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between liver disease and gustatory acuity.
    • To determine if taste disorders are present in patients with acute viral hepatitis and chronic liver disease.
    • To explore the reversibility of taste dysfunction as liver disease resolves.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed gustatory acuity in patients with acute viral hepatitis (n=22) and chronic liver disease (n=16).
    • Utilized subjective reports and objective measurements (detection/recognition thresholds, scaling) for various taste stimuli (NaCl, sucrose, HCl, urea).
    • Compared taste thresholds between patient groups and with disease progression/resolution.

    Main Results:

    • Disordered gustatory acuity was evident in both acute viral hepatitis and chronic liver disease patients.
    • The degree of taste impairment was comparable between early hepatitis and chronic liver disease groups.
