Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess thermoregulatory capacity in burn survivors during exercise in heat.
  • To compare heat tolerance in patients with large burns (≥60% BSA) versus moderate burns (30-40% BSA) and unburned individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Two groups of burn survivors (30-40% and ≥60% BSA) and a control group of unburned subjects exercised at 75 Watts in a 35°C, 60% relative humidity environment.
  • Physiological parameters including rectal and skin temperatures, heart rate, sweat rate, and skin blood flow were monitored.
  • Active sweat gland density was measured on burned and unburned skin.
