Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry

Context:

  • Isolation of a novel bacterium from Tianchi in Changbai mountain.
  • Identification of the produced sugar as trehalose using multiple analytical techniques.

Purpose:

  • To identify and characterize a novel trehalose-producing bacterium.
  • To develop high-yield trehalose-producing mutant strains for industrial applications.

Summary:

  • A new bacterial species, Colloides Sp. CB39, was identified for its ability to produce trehalose exocrinely at 18°C.
  • Mutant strain 5 was developed using UV induction, exhibiting significantly enhanced trehalose productivity (416.7 mg/g dry weight) at 25°C, eight times that of the wild type.

Impact:

  • Discovery of a unique low-temperature trehalose producer.
