Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Interventional Endoscopy
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Esophageal strictures present a significant clinical challenge.
  • Esophageal stenting is a primary palliative treatment for incurable esophagogastric carcinoma.
  • Stent use for benign strictures is less common but growing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the endoscopic use of esophageal stents for malignant and benign strictures.
  • To discuss current stent types, techniques, outcomes, and complications.
  • To provide practical advice and discuss future developments in esophageal stenting.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature on esophageal stent applications.
  • Analysis of different expandable stent designs and materials.
  • Evaluation of techniques, results, and complications of stent insertion.

Main Results:

  • Esophageal stents are effective for palliation in malignant strictures.
  • Newer stent designs and materials are enhancing treatment for benign strictures.
  • Complications and outcomes vary based on stent type and stricture etiology.

Conclusions:

  • Esophageal stenting is a valuable endoscopic intervention for both malignant and benign strictures.
  • Ongoing advancements in stent technology promise improved patient outcomes.
  • Further research and practical guidance are essential for optimizing esophageal stenting procedures.
