A low-cost telemedicine system using email and digital images proved effective in Nepal. This technology facilitated specialist consultations, improving diagnosis and management in a developing country setting.
Area of Science:
- Medical Informatics
- Global Health
- Digital Health
Background:
- Telemedicine offers a cost-effective solution for healthcare access in underserved regions.
- Establishing digital communication links can bridge geographical barriers in medical expertise.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the feasibility and impact of a low-cost telemedicine system in a developing country.
- To assess the quality and timeliness of specialist consultations via email with digital images.
Main Methods:
- Implementation of an email-based telemedicine link at Patan Hospital, Nepal.
- Analysis of 42 telemedicine referrals over 12 months, including image quality and specialist response times.
- Independent assessment of the helpfulness and impact of specialist advice.
Main Results:
- 36% of referrals were for respiratory medicine, 21% for neurology, and 21% for dermatology.
- 96% of attached digital images were of sufficient quality for specialist comment.
- Specialist replies averaged 2 days, with 45% received within 24 hours.
- 50% of cases could have had shortened hospital stays based on received advice.
Conclusions:
- A low-cost telemedicine link is technically feasible and beneficial in a developing world context.
- This method significantly aids in diagnosis, patient management, and medical education.
- Telemedicine can improve healthcare outcomes and efficiency in resource-limited settings.
