Summary

Sit-up training significantly improved sit-up performance, while curl-up training did not. This suggests that the specificity of exercise training is key for improving abdominal muscular fitness.

Background:

  • Curl-ups are suggested to better challenge abdominal muscles and reduce spinal stress compared to sit-ups.
  • Previous research has compared curl-ups and sit-ups, but not the impact of training programs focused on each exercise on subsequent sit-up performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of two different abdominal muscular fitness training regimens (curl-up vs. sit-up) on sit-up performance.
  • To analyze these effects across different sexes and baseline abdominal muscular fitness levels.

Main Methods:

  • A factorial experimental design was used with 102 healthy, college-aged subjects.
  • Subjects were randomly assigned to a curl-up training group, a sit-up training group, or a control group for a 6-week program.

  • Maximal 2-minute sit-up performance was measured pre- and post-training, with data analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference Test.
