Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of color Doppler sonography in assessing hypothyroidism.
  • To correlate sonographic findings with clinical and laboratory parameters in hypothyroid patients.

  • 89 patients with hypothyroidism underwent clinical examination, thyroid function tests, and color Doppler sonography.
  • Thyroid parenchymal color flow distribution, intensity, and peak systolic velocity (PSV) were assessed.
  • Color Doppler findings were graded (0-III) and correlated with clinical and laboratory data.

  • 56 patients showed minimal vascularization (Pattern 0, PSV 22 cm/s), while 33 exhibited increased vascularization (Patterns I-III, PSV 39-63 cm/s).
  • A strong correlation was observed between color intensity and anti-thyroid antibody levels (anti-Tg/anti-TPO).
  • Thyroid volume and TSH levels correlated with vascularization, while duration of hypothyroidism showed an inverse correlation.

Conclusions:

  • Intense thyroid hypervascularization, typically seen in hyperthyroidism, can also occur in hypothyroidism.
  • Color Doppler findings reflect autoimmune process activity rather than stimulated thyroid hormone production.
