Summary

Carbamazepine, an epilepsy medication, can cause temporary pitch perception changes in musicians. These rare auditory side effects resolve after discontinuing the drug.

Background:

Observation:

  • Two musically trained young patients, a boy and a girl, reported decreased pitch perception after starting carbamazepine.
  • Symptoms included perceiving musical notes as lower in pitch while playing the piano.

Findings:

  • Pitch perception abnormalities were reversible and resolved upon carbamazepine withdrawal.
  • The affected individuals were musically trained, young, female, and Japanese.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of rare, subtle auditory side effects like pitch alteration with carbamazepine.
  • Monitoring for such effects is important in musically inclined patients treated with carbamazepine.
