Summary

Melanonychia, a nail pigmentation, can be caused by PUVA (psoralen plus ultraviolet A) therapy. This side effect may be more frequent than currently documented in medical literature.

Background:

  • Psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy is a common dermatological treatment.
  • Melanonychia is a condition characterized by increased melanin in the nail unit.

Observation:

  • A case of melanonychia was observed in a patient undergoing PUVA therapy.
  • The nail pigmentation appeared to be a direct consequence of the treatment.

Findings:

  • PUVA therapy can induce melanonychia.
  • The occurrence of PUVA-induced melanonychia might be underestimated in clinical practice.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for nail changes with PUVA treatment.
  • Further investigation is warranted to determine the true incidence of this adverse effect.
