    Summary

    This study investigated copper deficiency in Border disease. Results show copper levels were similar or higher in affected lambs, concluding hypocupraemia is not linked to Border disease aetiology.

    Background:

    • Border disease is a significant ovine pestivirus infection.
    • Hypocupraemia (low copper) has been proposed as a characteristic and aetiologically significant feature of Border disease.
    • This hypothesis requires rigorous scientific investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the proposed link between hypocupraemia and Border disease.
    • To determine if low copper levels are a consistent feature of the disease.
    • To assess the aetiological significance of copper deficiency in Border disease pathogenesis.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparative analysis of plasma copper concentrations in affected and unaffected lambs (n=65 affected, n=47 unaffected).
    • Controlled experimental study measuring plasma and tissue copper levels in lambs with and without Border disease.
    • Statistical comparison of copper levels between groups.

    Main Results:

    • Mean plasma copper concentrations were similar between affected and unaffected lambs.
    • In a controlled experiment, affected lambs tended to exhibit higher plasma and tissue copper concentrations compared to controls.
    • No evidence of hypocupraemia or hypocuprosis as a consistent feature was found.

    Conclusions:

    • Hypocupraemia and hypocuprosis are not characteristic manifestations of Border disease.
    • Copper deficiency does not appear to have aetiological significance in Border disease.
    • The proposed link between low copper and Border disease is not supported by this investigation.
