Summary

A 1990s cigarette price decrease in Ontario coincided with increased youth smoking. This study suggests that lower cigarette prices may have contributed to higher smoking rates among young people.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Adolescent Health

Background:

  • Youth are particularly sensitive to changes in cigarette pricing.
  • Increased cigarette smuggling and a tax decrease in the early 1990s made cigarettes more accessible to young people in Ontario.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between cigarette price reductions and trends in smoking prevalence and consumption among Ontario youth.
  • To analyze the impact of the 1993 price decrease on youth smoking behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Ontario Student Drug Use Survey.
  • Employed polynomial regression and discontinuity regression analysis with 1993 as the event time to assess trends.
  • Examined trends in smoking prevalence and the average number of cigarettes smoked daily.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Overall youth smoking prevalence declined until 1993, then increased, followed by a subsequent decrease.
  • The mean daily cigarette consumption among daily smokers exhibited an initial rise followed by a decline over 24 years, showing a negative quadratic trend.
  • Specific trends were observed for various subgroups of Ontario youth.

Conclusions:

  • The findings indicate a potential link between the cigarette price decrease in the early 1990s and an increase in youth smoking in Ontario.
  • Lower cigarette prices may have influenced smoking initiation and continuation among adolescents.
